Heart Matters Lecture

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital will offer a free heart health lecture on Monday, May 12th at the Litchfield Community Center, 421 Bantam Road, Torrington. “Cardiology A to Z” will provide information on heart disease prevention, cardiac treatment and health maintenance following a cardiac episode.

Cardiologist Robert Kahan, M.D., will be the featured speaker. Dr. Kahan joined the Charlotte Hungerford staff in 1992 and practices with Associates in Cardiovascular Medicine on New Litchfield Street in Torrington. He is a graduate of Hahnemann University School of Medicine and completed residency at Staten Island Hospital.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with heart related information and demonstrations, light refreshments, free blood pressure screenings, and cholesterol screenings for a $10 charge. Dr. Kahan’s presentation will begin at 6:30 p.m. Members of the audience will have an opportunity to ask questions. Seating for this seminar is limited. 16th Annual Cancer Survivors Day

The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Center for Cancer Care is observing National Cancer Survivors Day on Sunday, June 1, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Eastwoods Country Club, 301 Torringford West Street, Torrington. This year's event is sponsored by Anne, Maria and Maxine Borghesi and The Center For Cancer Care Fund. Pre- registration by May 23rd is encouraged by calling 496-6396.

This annual event brings together cancer survivors, their families, and friends to celebrate and honor those living with and beyond cancer, and features free gifts, refreshments, music, and a time for cancer survivors to share.

“We invite the entire community to come together with us for fellowship, fun, food and a spiritual uplift that this special annual event provides.” says Janet Hooper, R.N., the Hospital’s Oncology Program Coordinator.

This year's event will feature a delicious brunch, and a celebratory drumming circle conducted by David Wonsey, percussion professor and performer of international fame. Matthew Speck with be the Master of Ceremonies.

Since 1993, a small group of dedicated nurses from Northwestern Connecticut Oncology and Hematology Associates, visiting nurse agencies, and The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital have joined together to organize this annual event in conjunction with National Cancer Survivors Day. Traditionally held on the first Sunday in June, the program has grown from a very small ceremony and tree planting at the Hospital, to a catered and celebratory event involving more than 200 people. Torrington joins over 700 communities throughout North America and elsewhere in celebrating life as part of an annual National Survivor’s Day celebration.
