The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) was enacted by the Federal Government in went into effect on April 14, 2003.

HIPPA regulations were designed to assure health insurance portability, reduce healthcare fraud and abuse, guarantee security and privacy of protected health information, and enforce standards for the exchange of this information.
