Charlotte Hungerford Hospital in CT’s Charlotte Place offers child abuse resources with a special program at the Center for Youth and Families responding to the unique needs of children and non-offending family members who are suffering from the effects of child abuse trauma. Trauma is when a person feels intensely threatened by an event he or she is involved in or witnesses. Charlotte’s Place offers mental health and advocacy services to children and families who are victims of physical child abuse, sexual abuse or domestic violence.
Children often develop reactions to trauma that linger and affect their daily lives long after the traumatic event has ended.
Children may experience:
- Recurrent thoughts about the abuse
- Behavioral changes
- Difficulties at school
- Difficulty eating and sleeping
Charlotte’s Place uses a sensitive, child-friendly approach to treat children and trauma while providing a safe, nurturing environment. Parents and caregivers play a very important role in treatment towards helping their child recover from their traumatic experiences.
Charlotte’s Place clinicians at our child hospital are trained and use trauma-informed interventions such as Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). TF-CBT is supported by research as being one of the most effective treatments for children who are suffering from trauma related symptoms.
Services offered are free of charge and include:
- Individual therapy
- Family therapy
- Group therapy
- Support for Non-offending parents
- Victim’s Compensation and Claim Assistance
- Parent Partner
