The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) and Torrington High School (THS) co-sponsored a first-time educational event for high school students interested in careers in healthcare entitled “A Day in the Life of a Patient.”
“The hospital hopes this is the first of many educational learning experiences for our community’s students,” said Brian Mattiello, Vice President of Organizational Development at CHH. “Especially for those interested in the health professions or hospital-based work. We are committed to being an accessible resource for students as they explore career fields and want to assure our hospital is an option for them as an employer.”
Mattiello, along with CHH Board member Dr. Stephanie Fowler, coordinated the morning’s event to give students an in depth look at all of the different jobs that exist in the hospital setting.
Held at the hospital in early June, 35 junior and senior students from THS spent the morning at the hospital where they were presented with a hypothetical case study of a 16-year-old male who suffered from uncontrolled asthma and was a non-compliant diabetic. This pretend patient was uninsured who just was involved in a motor vehicle accident resulting in a right leg and head injury
Students then followed how the patent would be taken care of upon arrival to the hospital through a series of presentations by over 20 representatives from all areas of the hospital. Each spoke and explained to the students how their role would impact this scenario from departments such as the Emergency Room, X-ray, admitting, patient care, pharmacy, and case management.
Representatives also explained their personal experiences and what led them to the positions they currently hold at the hospital. They explained their schooling, background and what led them to choose their specific careers.
The morning ended with a video and hands on demonstration from the CHH education department with an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Students also had an opportunity to tour the hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation Center and get their blood pressure taken if desired.
