Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s (CHH) new white oak tree recently arrived and took a proud place in the hospital’s front circle courtyard as part of the first phase of a beautification project that included replacing a large 100 year-old oak tree lost in last October’s early snowstorm. Members of the board, auxiliary and staff of the Hospital’s Front Circle Beautification Committee gathered to welcome the new twenty-year-old, fifteen 15 foot tree provided by Zaharak’s Landscaping who created a new circular ppathway to honor to highlight it for future generations.
Since the loss of the hospital’s beloved white oak tree, members of committee have been busy overseeing a new multi-year landscape project to replace the tree and make improvements to the front entrance area. Phase one of the project which is nearing completion includes the leveling and grading the area where the former tree stood, adding wider more accessible pathways, relocating plantings and the flag poles, and installing new signage. Future phases of the front circle project will include expanded seating and shade areas, upgraded benches, and new plantings.
“It is our hope that our new tree will celebrate the memory and history of our original tree and what it meant to all of us, and at that same time symbolize a new beginning and fresh look to the future for our hospital campus.” said Tim LeBouthillier, CHH Director of Community and Public Relations.
CHH and its community partners will be hosting a “Fit Together” health and fitness tent near the town hall every Thursday at this year’s downtown Torrington Main Street Marketplace. Visitors on Thursday June 28th and August 9 will enjoy a wood carving demonstration by Joe Brien, a woodworker and artist who has been busy helping CHH spearhead the the creation of pens, furniture, and artwork fashioned from the wood of the original oak tree that was preserved.
