The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Auxiliary will display the award winning paintings of artist Sherri Baxter at Charlotte Hungerford Hospital from November 5 through December 3, 2012, in the hospital’s main lobby hallway, 540 Litchfield Street, Torrington.
The public is invited to view the works during regular visiting hours as part of the Auxiliary’s ongoing “Artist of the Month” program. The drawings are available for sale with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Auxiliary.
Known for her award winning pastels, Sherri is a Signature Member of Connecticut Pastel Society since 2008. She won two awards for “the Promises” a portrait of a Viet Nam Vet from the Watertown Art League (First in Pastel) and from Connecticut Pastel Society Renaissance in Pastel show. The artist’s paintings of “Lanes Island” (Vinal Haven Me.) won the Jerry’s Artarama award in 2010. Sherri’s waterscape of “Messer Pond” of New London, NH, brought another award this this past summer. Sherri is also represented by the Tate Well Gallery of New London, NH.
Sherri was born in Brooklyn and raised on the water’s edge on Long Island. Her father was a commercial photographer and his influence along with her geographic surroundings were a source of direction for her artistic pursuits. Many of her works have a mix of realism and an impressionists mood and light. She attended the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan in 1964. She began to make art professionally in 1967. Baxter originally was a photographer and promotional designer for MGM (Verve Forecast) Studios designing album covers and publicity portfolios for the young talents Harumi, The Monkeys, and Tiny Tim. She also created the logo for the Record Plant a world renowned recording studio in Manhattan. Sherri continues designing and illustrating cover art for the CD “Jam Sandwich” (kids music) as well as a book cover for “The Spirituality of Sobriety”. She was introduced to the pastel medium in 1995 and fell in love. Her focus became portraits of people and cats and dogs. She believes when you love something that that emotion comes through the painting. The eyes of a dog or a beloved pet can speak volumes. Sherri’s work is in many private collections including The Center For Cancer Care of Torrington and can often be seen air painting this areas beautiful scenery.
The Auxiliary’s “Artist of the Month” program has been featuring paintings, photographs, and artwork each month from local artists for over 25 years. The organization has over 400 member supporters who assist in raising money for the hospital through dues, donations, volunteering at the gift shop, and assisting with a variety of events including an annual fall fashion show and luncheon.
