Charlotte Hungerford Hospital Invites
Community to “Go Red” For Heart Disease
February is American Heart Health Month, and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) is joining healthcare organizations and companies across the nation to “GO RED” for women on Friday, February 1st to highlight symptoms and prevention methods for women regarding heart disease. The CHH Cardiology Department is offering free blood pressure screenings, giveaways, tips and information on heart disease that day from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the CHH cafeteria, 540 Litchfield Street, Torrington.
This annual observance is held in conjunction with the American Heart Association’s national campaign to raise awareness of heart disease in women and encourage them to take charge of their health. The hospital’s food service has planned special heart healthy meal selections for purchase. CHH staff members and all those attending are encouraged to wear red to raise awareness that day.
“The national ‘Go Red’ campaign is designed for women, but men are most welcome to participate in this heart health initiative. Many members of our community have been personally touched by heart disease and this is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness” said Laurene Wallace, Manager of Cardiology Services at the hospital.
According to the National Heart Association, heart disease affects one in three female adults and continues to be the leading cause of death in women. While 1 in 31 American women dies from breast cancer each year, 1 in 3 dies of heart disease. Only 1 in 5 American women believe that heart disease is her greatest health threat. Ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease.
