The Torrington based Free Spirit Lady Harley Riders Motorcycle Club has made a $4,000 donation to Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Center For Cancer Care Fund, Inc. This year is the seventh consecutive year the group has raised money for the fund, which uses donations to assist and support cancer patients residing or receiving care in northwest Connecticut through care, treatment, education and prevention programs.
Free Spirit held its annual fundraiser at Ma’asser Park in Colebrook, CT. The event featured live music by The D. Smith Blues Band, donated raffle items and contributions from many local and non local businesses and several cancer survivors that utilize the Cancer Center for services.
This year Free Spirit celebrated its 20th anniversary as a club and 10th annual fundraiser. Each cancer survivor that attended the event whose ages ranged from 13 to 76, was handed a rose in their honor. “It is always humbling to witness the strength and courage of these survivors, this is why we do the fundraiser” stated Connie Pratillo–Perna, original member and President of Free Spirit.
Free Spirit is very grateful to family members and friends who supported the event and helped raise over twice the amount of last year’s event. Their annual goal is not to just raise money, but to represent Free Spirit members as a group of like minded professional women who share the passion of riding and love for the open road and are bonded by their involvement in community service. Free Spirit plans to continue to provide these necessary funds to help families dealing and living with the effects of cancer. Their insignia is a purple rose with the crossbones, which symbolize women, femininity and companionship. Next year’s event will be held in September.
The group offers special thanks to Jay and Sharon Flynn of Torrington who raised over $2,100 and also donated numerous items for the raffle, and to Francis Phillips who donated an authentic Martin Guitar which was hand crafted and signed by C.F. Martin IV for a separate raffle where all proceeds went to the Cancer Care Center Fund.
Free Spirit would also like to highlight and thank all the supporters, sponsors, and contributors from their September fundraiser. These include Don Clady from Connecticut News Cruise, Kevin Hogan from channel 3 news, and Joe Kowalski form WCCC for promoting the event.
