The northwest corner’s annual “Tour of the Litchfield Hills” Cycling Tour will celebrate its tenth anniversary by returning to Torrington’s Coe Park on Sunday, August 4th to benefit the Cancer Care Fund of the Litchfield Hills, formerly known as The Center for Cancer Care Fund Last year the event raised $97,025, bringing the total raised by the Tour over the past 9 years to $691,264. All funds raised through this event are used to provide support for cancer patients residing in or receiving treatment in northwest Connecticut.
The Cancer Care Fund of the Litchfield Hills is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to people battling cancer, and gives assistance for unexpected emergencies for cancer patients for which there are no immediate resources. For example, funds may be allocated for food, transportation, utility bills and medications that are not covered by insurance. The Fund also provides funding for complementary therapies available to cancer patients.
The annual Tour brings together hundreds of cyclists and supporters to raise money for an important cause, helping patients with cancer at a time when they need assistance. The committee responsible for bringing all this together starts meeting in January. It is a group of loyal supporters who know what they have to do and when they have to do it and have been working together for several years to make this the successful event it has become.
“This is an important event for those of us who live and work in this area. Our friends and family members directly benefit from the proceeds. We are pleased that we have been able to support residents in need for the past nine years” says Matt Pagano Chair of the Tour Planning Committee, made up of volunteers who live and work in this area.
This cycling charity ride consists of 12, 30, 55, 75, and 100-mile routes. There are also 2.4, 4.2 and 8 mile walking routes for non-cyclists who wish to participate. All routes begin and end at Coe Park in downtown Torrington and the day concludes with a picnic for participants at the park. All cycling routes follow paved, lightly traveled roads throughout picturesque Litchfield County that are fully supported with rest stops and on-the-road support vehicles.
