The Lewis Mills High School Girls’ Volleyball Team came together during one of their finalVarsity and Junior Varsity 2013 season games for a very special cause – to help raise awareness and money for the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital’s Pink Rose Fund which funds mammograms for local women in need.
The team hosted and introduced Raquel Ortiz, Community Navigator/Outreach Educator from Charlotte’s Early Detection Program for breast health screening services who distributed materials about the importance of mammograms as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Raquel and her colleagues do extensive outreach in the community to help get the word out: Every day is free Mammogram at CHH if a women needs it.
The team collected donations and promoted a pink hair strand fundraiser raising $500 which they presented to the representatives of the fund.
“The overwhelming support and generosity we have received from the team and their supporters at Lewis Mills and the community’s so gratifying to all of us at the program. Their donation will directly help local women with potentially lifesaving screenings.” said Leslie Handelman, R.N, the CHH Breast Health Navigator.
The Pink Rose Program is supported by a grants from the CT Department of Public Health, the Susan G. Komen Foundation, and local fundraising events. It was established in 1998 to provide free mammograms and other diagnostic services to women in our region who are uninsured or underinsured. The purpose of the program is to ensure that ALL women in our community have access to regular mammograms. Early detection through mammography has been found to be the safest and most effective way of finding breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stages.
