Lung cancer screenings are available if you are a current or former heavy smoker. Smokers should talk to their doctor about scheduling a lung cancer screening through the Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) Early Detection Program’s new Lung Cancer Screening Service. To qualify for the lung cancer screening, you must be a current or former smoker having quit within the last 15 years, be between 55 to 79 years old, have a smoking history of at least one pack per day for 30 years or two packs per day for 15 years, do not have a medical history of lung cancer, and have a primary care physician. Insurance is recommended.
The screening utilizes a fast, painless, low cost, low dose CT scan. Afterwards, a radiologist will determine if the findings were negative, indeterminate or suspicious. If the results are negative, it is recommended the screening by repeated annually for two years. If the results are indeterminate, the team of specialists will stay watchful and conduct further follow-up imaging. If your results are suspicious, you will undergo further testing and, if necessary, treatment. The test is now being offered for $99 for a limited time by CHH and Torrington Radiologists.
