(Torrington, CT) – Springtime is a perfect time for Charlotte Hungerford Hospital and LifeChoice Donor Services to come together to celebrate those who have participated and registered in this lifesaving organ and tissue donation program. CHH staff and LifeChoice representatives held a special ceremony recently to raise a new “Donate Life” flag on the hospital’s main campus flagpole, honor past donors, and promote donor awareness and participation. During 2014, seven individuals were tissue donors at CHH, changing the lives of so many who need transplants in Connecticut.
The Donate Life flag will fly on the CHH campus along with the American and Connecticut State flags. Charlotte Hungerford is one of only 400 hospitals nationwide to be recognized for their participation in the 2014 Workplace Partnership For Life Campaign. Through the combined efforts of these hospitals, the campaign resulted in adding 327,659 enrollments to state donor registries.
“It is a very meaningful program and we are so pleased to partner with our colleagues at LifeChoice Donor Services to help fulfill the wishes of individuals and family members who want to make lifesaving donations to those in need.” said Teresa Fuller, Administrative Director, Nursing Services and Pharmacy at CHH.
Lifechoice is an Organ procurement organization (OPO) that facilitates the organ and tissue donation process for CHH. OPOs are responsible for honoring an individual’s decision to donate when they have joined a donor registry and providing compassionate support to families. OPOs also evaluate potential donors for medical suitability, assist with the placement of organs for transplant, and facilitate the recovery of both organs and tissues.
“Every day people across the U.S. make a special effort to celebrate the tremendous generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming organ and tissue donors and to encourage more Americans to follow their fine example.” said Ann Marie Blanco of LifeChoice Donor Services.
To join the donor registry, individuals can sign up at the DMV at the time of their license renewal or can register online at Donatelifenewengland.org. The online registry allows individuals to document their specific wishes regarding organ and tissue donation.
