CHH Breast Health Center Receives $65,000 in Grant Support From Susan G. Komen Connecticut

(Torrington, CT) – Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) is pleased to announce that it has received two grants from Susan G. Komen Connecticut® totaling $65,000 to support screening and patient navigation programs aimed at assisting the uninsured and underinsured women of Northwest Connecticut.

“Once again we offer our sincere thanks to Susan G. Komen CT and all who support them for their dedication and commitment to what we do in the northwest corner to help women prevent and fight breast cancer,” said Project Director, Leslie Handelman, R.N.

A $15,000 award will be used to continue to provide community screenings. The second grant of $50,000 will be used to fund patient navigation services to eligible recipients in a new, larger geographic area that now includes all of Litchfield County cities and towns including New Milford.

The Hospital’s Breast Health and Pink Rose Programs provide educational outreach and screening funds to assure that the women of Northwest Connecticut have comprehensive, coordinated access to services related to breast cancer prevention and treatment. CHH staff work in conjunction with the CT Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program to ensure that medically underserved women, typically those greater than 40 years old, are being educated about breast cancer and programs that help defer the cost of screening services. Susan G. Komen Connecticut recently announced that there is now additional grant money available for women under 40 that need financial assistance for diagnostic services such as breast biopsy.

The hospital’s breast health services bring together the best professionals, technology, and breast healthcare programs for women in a comprehensive network of early detection services and treatment. Services include a breast health navigation program, screening, diagnostic breast imaging, and surgery by a team of highly skilled surgeons and medical professionals, cancer treatment and clinical trials, and state-of-the-art radiation therapy.  For more information about the Hungerford Breast Health Center, call 860-496-6819.
