CHH January Artist of the Month On Display

CHH Auxiliary JAN 16 artist(Torrington, CT) – The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) Auxiliary is displaying the watercolor and acrylic paintings of May Phillips now through early February 2016 in the hospital’s main lobby hallway, 540 Litchfield Street, Torrington. The public is invited to view the works during regular visiting hours as part of the Auxiliary’s ongoing “Artist of the Month” program. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the artwork support the CHH Auxiliary and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.

May Phillips love of painting is expressed in her work. The freshness of color is revealed in her watercolor and acrylic paintings. She is equally proficient in pen and ink drawings. Jack Flynn, Timothy Clark, Carlton Plummer, Al Stine and other well-known artists have influenced her style. She has also taken a variety of art courses in Central Connecticut, the Hudson Valley, Western Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Italy and Spain. In addition, she has attended and taught at numerous art workshops. For many years she had taught watercolor painting. She has also designed and painted wall murals.

In 1994 and 1998 her original design Christmas ornaments were selected to hang on the White House Christmas tree in the Blue Room. In 2002 she was selected to be the Convention Artist for the New England Traditions Convention in Providence R.I. Her latest murals can be seen on Nino’s Italian Restaurant walls, in Waterbury, CT. and the Springfield Shrine Hospital for Children in Springfield, MA. Also she has had the honor to teach watercolor painting on a Carnival Cruise ship.

Her work has been exhibited in various Juried Art shows and she has received several awards. She is a member of the Connecticut Watercolor Society, and the Watertown Art league. She has also exhibited her art work at the State of Connecticut Legislative Building, a variety of galleries and many business establishments. She has chaired and juried several art shows. Many of May’s works are included in numerous private collections. Her latest work can be seen at the Center Frame and Art Gallery in West Hartford, CT. and PS Gallery in Litchfield, CT.

The Auxiliary’s “Artist of the Month” program has been featuring paintings, photographs, and artwork each month from local artists for over 25 years. Their over 200 member supporters assist in raising money for the hospital through dues, donations, volunteering at the gift shop, and a variety of events including an annual fall fashion show and luncheon.
