The Charlotte Hungerford Hospital (CHH) Auxiliary is featuring the artwork of Tom Hlas now through early June 2019 in the hospital’s main lobby hallway, 540 Litchfield Street, Torrington. The public is invited to view and buy the works during regular visiting hours as part of the Auxiliary’s ongoing “Artist of the Month” program. A portion of the proceeds from sales of the artwork support the CHH Auxiliary and Charlotte Hungerford Hospital.
Born the eighth of ten children in rural Iowa, Tom obtained a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Northern Iowa. After teaching vocal music in a public school, he worked as Director of Religious Education and Youth Ministry in a local parish. He went on to study theology and philosophy, then focused on his marketing career in the cities of Washington, Miami and Philadelphia. Tiring of big city life, he moved to Norfolk, Connecticut, where he has a studio practice.
Tom finds inspiration in the paper cutouts of Matisse, the abstract expressionists, the color field painters of yesteryear, as well as print makers and artists of today. He works primarily in acrylics and mixed media collage. “My goal in producing art is to create work that expresses my creative energy at the moment and hopefully allows others to have a personal connection with it for years to come.” says Hlas. As well as his studio practice, he also teaches art courses at the West Hartford Art League.
The Auxiliary’s “Artist of the Month” program has been featuring paintings, photographs, and artwork each month from local artists for over 25 years. Their over 200 member supporters assist in raising money for the hospital through dues, donations, volunteering at the gift shop, and a variety of events including an annual fashion show.
